Chess

Atomic

Every capture sets off an explosion that destroys the capturing piece, its victim, and every piece on the eight neighbouring squares.

What is different here

Take something and your own piece goes with it, along with any non-pawn piece standing next to the square where it happened. Pawns are unharmed by the blast unless they were the ones captured.

Kings cannot capture at all, and a capture that would destroy your own king is against the rules. Blowing up the enemy king wins on the spot, which means the game is usually decided long before anything resembling a checkmate.

Games are short and strange. A single careless capture can end everything.

  • A capture removes the capturing piece, the captured piece, and every non-pawn piece on the eight squares around it.
  • Pawns survive an explosion beside them; only a captured pawn is destroyed.
  • Kings may never capture anything.
  • A capture that would destroy your own king is illegal and cannot be played.
  • Destroying the enemy king wins immediately, and two kings standing next to each other are never in check.
